Florida Gets a “D”, Ranks 40th in National Safety Study

May 7, 2018, on Lawsuit Funding |

How safe are you on the road, at work and in your community? Maybe not as safe as you think. According to the National Safety Council’s The State of Safety report, Florida ranks 40th in the nation when it comes to, “actions and policies [adopted] . . . to reduce risk for all residents.” Florida received an overall grade of “D,” and received an “F” in the Road Safety and Workplace Safety categories.

Leading Injury Risks for Florida Residents

In addition to grading each state in the categories of Road Safety, Home and Community Safety, and Workplace Safety, the National Safety Council (NSC) also rated each state as “On Track,” “Off Track” or “Developing” in various areas within each category. Out of the 17 total areas, Florida received an “On Track” rating in just one.

Some of Florida’s worst scores were in the areas of:

  • Distracted Driving – Florida has not banned teen cell phone use behind the wheel, and a legislative effort to make texting-while-driving a primary offense recently died in the state senate. As a result, distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions.
  • Vulnerable Road Users – Florida’s law allowing motorcycle riders over age 21 to ride without a helmet and the state’s failure to pass a law protecting pedestrians in uncontrolled intersections led to the state’s “Off Track” rating in this category.
  • Prevention, Preparedness and Enforcement at Work – Unlike other states, Florida does not require employers to offer safety and health programs. It also does not have a requirement for employers to establish workplace safety committees, and it has not enacted laws targeting the risks of workplace violence.
